PLACEMENT OF THE VS-6
Niles recommends placing the VS-6 as close as possible to the equipment it will be controlling.
Generally, the unit should be placed in an equipment rack with the other system components.
The VS-6 has slots on the top and bottom cover of the unit for cooling. Other equipment should not
block these ventilation slots. When integrating the VS-6 into a rack with the supplied rack mount
ears, the general rule is to allow 1 rack space above and below for cooling. One rack space is
equivalent to 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) of space.
The VS-6 could have as many as 13 CAT-5 cables
connected. Labels are recommended to describe
where each cable originates (not which terminal
it connects to). The CAT-5 must be terminated
with RJ-45 connectors using the T568A standard
conﬁguration (Figure 1).
COMPONENT VIDEO CABLES
The VS-6 has inputs and outputs for component video signals. Use high-quality component video
cables. Component video cables sometimes come with the sources, but Niles recommends high-
performance cables. Component video cables can be custom made to length by using RG-6 coaxial
cable terminated with RCA jacks. The maximum coaxial run for component video signals should
not exceed 150 feet (45.7 meters) for best signal quality. If longer signal runs are needed, it is
suggested to use the VS-6’s balanced video outputs and CAT-5 cable.
The VS-6 can be controlled using RS-232 control cable from the Niles IC2 Home Theater
Automation and Control System or a third-party control system. Niles does not supply RS-232 cables.
The connection on the VS-6 is a female DB-9 connection. DB9-RS-232 control cables can be
purchased at most computer supply stores. RS-232 cable length should not exceed 50 feet (15.2
meters) to support RS-232 baud rates up to 9,600bps (bits per second).
Flasher cable should be run if you plan to control the VS-6 by an infrared ﬂasher on the front panel
(such as the Niles MF1 MicroFlasher®) or the ﬂasher output connection of a Niles IR Main System
Unit (i.e. MSU140) to the IR Input port on the VS-6 rear panel. Niles MF1 MicroFlashers include
a 10-foot (3 meter) cable. Flasher cables can be extended up to 200 feet (61 meters) using
2-conductor, 22-gauge wire (“zip-cord”) or with the Niles 10-foot (3 meters) accessory cable
(FG00933). Please refer to the Accessories section for more information.
