SYSTEM DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
The Niles VS-6 Component Video Switcher can be integrated into many different system conﬁgura-
tions. To fully understand these conﬁgurations, it’s important to ﬁrst understand the basic control
sections of the VS-6.
NETWORK INTEGRATION WITH NILES COMPATIBLE
The most integrated and seamless control solution for the VS-6 is to integrate it with a Niles
Network MultiZone Receiver. On a Niles Network MultiZone Receiver system design, all devices are
interconnected using CAT-5 cable, are uniquely identiﬁed and their conﬁguration is coordinated
using Niles QuickConﬁg PC Conﬁguration Software. On the rear panel of the VS-6 are seven RJ-45
communication ports. Connecting the one labeled Out to Master to a compatible Niles MultiZone
Receiver using CAT-5 cable activates the other communication ports and the VS-6 as part of the
network and all communication and control are processed using this connection. Please check with
Niles Technical Support for the latest compatible MultiZone receiver.
IR INPUT PORT AND IR SENSOR WINDOW
IR (Infrared) codes can control the VS-6. These IR codes have two paths into the VS-6: the IR Input
Port or the IR Sensor Window (IR codes available for download at www.nilesaudio.com).
IR INPUT PORT
• The VS-6 receives commands from any Niles IR Main System Unit (MSU) or compatible
multizone receiver by connecting a 3.5mm mono plug to an IR Output of the MSU then to
the IR Input Port on the rear panel of the VS-6.
IR SENSOR WINDOW
• The IR Sensor Window of the VS-6 (located on the front panel) receives IR commands
from a hand-held learning remote (containing VS-6 IR codes) .

RS-232 INPUT PORT
RS-232 is a serial protocol for controlling the VS-6. It utilizes a DB-9 connection with standard
“transmit and receive” communications from RS-232 control devices, third-party whole-house
automation and control systems, the Niles HT-MSU and the IC2 Home Theater Automation and
Control System. These are equipped with the needed connection and can be programmed to
control the VS-6 via RS-232. The RS-232 connection has a dipswitch section for addressing
multiple VS-6’s, baud rate, and other set up options.
